When you're sizing up the green with an iron in-hand, what kind of shot do you go for?

If you’re faced with a tricky approach shot, are you a risk-taker? Or do you prefer to play it safe? Risk-reward is the eternal question when it comes to how you’ll play your shot.

It can be one of the best feelings in golf to size up an approach, strike it well, and feel the satisfaction of having your shot come to nestle close to the pin. But it can also be instantly disheartening to go for the hole only to be caught in a pesky hazard.

However you’re used to playing, the changing of the seasons might have just made up your mind for you…

Preparing for winter golf

We’ve just had a glorious summer with plenty of hot sunny days spent on the golf course. During this time, the courses have been in immaculate condition, but the winter brings with it certain challenges that go beyond there being less natural daylight.

The winter air is dense and rich with moisture, much more so than that of the summer months. This most notably causes there to be more resistance as the ball travels through the air, causing it to not fly as far.

While this means the ball doesn’t bump and run as much, it means you can essentially go for the flag with the knowledge that your ball is going to sit down straight away rather than bounce off the green. This makes it a whole lot more exciting when you pull off a really good approach shot, and have the satisfaction of watching your ball sit down pleasantly a matter of feet away from the hole.

Another thing to consider therefore, is that if you’ve been used to hitting bump-and-run shots in the warmer weather, you’ll need to adjust your strategy as this method will have you falling short of the green in the winter.

Practice makes perfect

The two key contributors to playing better golf are of course, practice, but foremostly making sure you’re playing with the right equipment in the first place.

If it’s been a good few years since you’ve switched up your irons, you’ll certainly benefit from adding the latest Wilson clubs to your bag. When you visit us for a custom-fitting, we’ll take a look at how you swing your clubs and pair you with the best clubs for your style of play.

Once you’ve been outfitted with some new Wilson irons, you’ll quickly get into the swing of things when you take them down the range. Not only will you have fun breaking in your new irons, but you’ll also get a good chance to consider how the ball flies and lands in the changing seasonal conditions.

So, what kind of clubs can you expect to find on our shelves in the pro shop?

Wilson's excellent golf irons

When it comes to better striking your approach shots, most golfers will benefit from a club that offers greater forgiveness and accuracy. If this sounds like you, you’ll hugely benefit from adding the T-Series golf irons to your bag.

Should you be a skilled player with a low handicap, the Staff Model Blade iron will help you shape your shots just how you want to. Rigorously constructed from carbon steel, this iron looks as good as it feels, and Wilson’s internal Golf Ai tech system provides a pleasant vibrational feedback when striking through the ball. This club truly feels as good as it looks to play with and will help you tighten up your shot dispersion.

Featuring a lot of the same tech as is found in the standard Staff Model Blade iron, the Staff Model CB has a cavity back design that provides players with greater stability and overall forgiveness. The CB iron has been crafted with a thicker topline that looks great when you’re standing over the ball, giving the player a higher, more predictable ball flight. If you want to build more confidence in your approach shots, this is the iron for you.
